**Nagpur, Maharashtra:** Anil Deshmukh, a former Maharashtra home minister and NCP (SP) leader, was injured on Monday evening when unidentified assailants pelted stones at his car near Katol, Nagpur. The 74-year-old sustained minor head injuries and is receiving treatment at Alexis Superspeciality Hospital in Nagpur, where a CT scan revealed no serious complications.
The attack occurred while Deshmukh was campaigning for his son, Salil Deshmukh, who is the NCP (SP) candidate in the upcoming Katol constituency elections. Police have launched an investigation, but the perpetrators remain at large.
The incident has sparked outrage among opposition parties. Senior Congress leader Balasaheb Thorat criticized the law and order situation in Nagpur, pointing fingers at Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who also hails from the district and holds the home portfolio. He demanded immediate intervention from the Election Commission.
NCP (SP) leaders echoed these concerns, suggesting a potential political motive behind the attack. NCP (SP) chief spokesperson Mahesh Tapase and working president Supriya Sule both condemned the violence, highlighting the unusual nature of such attacks during election campaigns.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut called for a thorough investigation, hinting at a possible conspiracy. He noted Deshmukh’s recent book release, which may have revealed sensitive information.
Following the attack, MVA supporters marched to the Katol police station demanding swift arrests. Salil Deshmukh appealed for calm and requested supporters to disperse. The incident has raised serious concerns about political violence and the security of political figures during the election period.
