**New Delhi:** The Supreme Court has once again questioned the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) low conviction rate in Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) cases. A bench comprising Justices Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan sought data from the ED on the number of PMLA cases that reach trial and the number resulting in convictions. The court observed that this information is crucial before proceeding further.

The court’s questioning came during the hearing of a bail plea in a PMLA case. This is not the first time the Supreme Court has criticized the ED’s performance; in August, the court highlighted that out of approximately 5,000 PMLA cases registered in the last 10 years, only 40 resulted in convictions. The court’s continued scrutiny underscores concerns over the effectiveness of the ED’s investigations and prosecutions under the PMLA.
