**Abuja, Nigeria –** Prime Minister Narendra Modi was awarded Nigeria’s second-highest national honour, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), on Sunday, November 17, 2024. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu presented the award, making Modi only the second foreign dignitary to receive this distinction after Queen Elizabeth II in 1969.
PM Modi expressed humility and dedicated the award to the people of India and the strengthening India-Nigeria friendship. He highlighted the nations’ cooperative relationship based on mutual respect and goodwill, emphasizing joint efforts for the benefit of both countries. Discussions with Nigerian leadership focused on expanding cooperation across diverse sectors, including economy, energy, agriculture, security, fintech, and small and medium-scale enterprises.
Modi’s visit, the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Nigeria in 17 years, is the initial leg of a three-nation tour. Upon arrival, he was presented with the “Key to the City” of Abuja, symbolizing the Nigerian people’s trust and honour. He will proceed to Brazil for the G20 summit and then to Guyana. The Prime Minister stressed the importance of collaboration with Africa and prioritized the interests of the Global South.
