**Abuja, Nigeria – November 17, 2024** – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was awarded the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger, Nigeria’s second-highest national honour, by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Sunday. This makes Modi only the second foreign dignitary to receive this prestigious award, following Queen Elizabeth II in 1969.

Prime Minister Modi expressed his humility and dedicated the award to the people of India and the strengthening friendship between India and Nigeria. He highlighted the strong relationship between the two nations, built on mutual cooperation and respect, and emphasized their collaborative efforts for the betterment of both countries.

During his meetings with Nigerian leadership, Modi discussed expanding cooperation in various sectors, including economy, energy, agriculture, security, fintech, small and medium-scale enterprises, and culture. He also underscored Nigeria’s significant role in Africa and India’s commitment to strengthening ties with the continent. The Prime Minister’s visit, the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Nigeria in 17 years, marks the beginning of a three-nation tour that will also include stops in Brazil and Guyana. Upon his arrival in Abuja, Modi was presented with the “Key to the City” by the Minister for Federal Capital Territory.
