Sun Nov 17 21:08:52 UTC 2024: ## NPP Withdraws Support from Manipur BJP Government Amidst Crisis

**Imphal, Manipur –** The National People’s Party (NPP) has withdrawn its support for the BJP-led government in Manipur, citing the government’s failure to address the ongoing crisis and restore peace in the state. The announcement, made on November 17th, 2024, by NPP national president and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, follows a recent surge in violence and the discovery of multiple bodies.

In a letter to BJP president J.P. Nadda, Sangma expressed deep concern over the deteriorating situation and the suffering of the people of Manipur. The NPP, which holds seven seats in the 60-member Manipur Assembly, is a key component of both the NDA and the NEDA. However, their withdrawal will not affect the BJP’s majority, as the BJP holds 32 seats, along with the support of 5 NPF and 6 JD(U) MLAs.

The decision comes amidst widespread unrest in Manipur, including attacks on the homes of at least 15 legislators, including a BJP Minister. The violence followed the discovery of the bodies of six women and children abducted earlier in November. Manipur Congress president Keisham Meghachandra Singh even offered to resign his seat, urging for a fresh mandate to bring peace to the state. The escalating violence has prompted calls for the resignation of ministers and MLAs.

Despite the NPP’s withdrawal, the BJP government in Manipur retains its majority and is expected to continue. However, the move highlights the growing pressure on the government to effectively address the ongoing crisis and restore order. The situation remains tense, with security forces deployed in Imphal. Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, has reviewed the security situation in the state.
