Mon Nov 18 11:55:02 UTC 2024: ## Iran’s Supreme Leader Reportedly Names Son as Successor Amidst Internal Turmoil and Israeli Conflict

**Tehran** – Amidst escalating tensions with Israel and internal political instability, reports suggest that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is critically ill and has secretly chosen his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, as his successor. This revelation, published by Iran International and cited by YNet News, comes weeks after the New York Times reported on a clandestine power struggle to succeed Khamenei.

The 85-year-old Khamenei’s failing health has been a subject of speculation for some time. While he appeared publicly on October 4th, reportedly with a rifle at his side, addressing the Iranian people and offering prayers for Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, killed in an Israeli strike, concerns about his condition remain.

According to Iran International, a surprise meeting of 60 members of the Assembly of Experts was called on September 26th at Khamenei’s behest. The Assembly was reportedly pressured, with threats implied, into unanimously selecting Mojtaba as the next Supreme Leader despite initial resistance. The secrecy surrounding the meeting and its outcome, allegedly maintained through intimidation, lasted five weeks.

Unlike the relatively smooth transition following the death of Ayatollah Khomeini in 1989, which involved a power broker like Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, Khamenei’s succession is fraught with difficulties. The absence of a unifying figure like Rafsanjani, coupled with the unpopularity of many within Khamenei’s inner circle, complicates the process. Furthermore, events such as the 2024 helicopter crash killing a potential successor, Ibrahim Raisi, and the assassination of Qassem Soleimani in 2020, have left a vacuum in potential leaders. Ongoing socio-political unrest, such as the protests following Mahsa Amini’s death, further exacerbates the situation.

Mojtaba Khamenei, born in 1969, has a history of involvement in Iranian politics, having supported Mahmoud Ahmadinejad during the 2005 and 2009 presidential elections, and allegedly playing a significant role in suppressing protests after the 2009 election. His relationship with Ahmadinejad later soured.

The appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei as the designated successor has the potential for significant regional repercussions, particularly given the ongoing conflict with Israel. The uncertainty surrounding Iran’s leadership transition remains a critical factor in the already volatile geopolitical landscape of the Middle East.
