**Abuja, Nigeria** – Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Nigeria on Sunday for the first leg of a three-nation tour, becoming only the second foreign dignitary to receive Nigeria’s highest national award, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger. Queen Elizabeth II was the first recipient in 1969.

Modi’s visit, the first by an Indian Prime Minister in 17 years, marks a significant strengthening of bilateral relations. He held talks with Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, focusing on bolstering cooperation in defense, energy, and trade. President Tinubu praised India’s developmental assistance, including $100 million in concessional loans and capacity-building programs.

The two leaders discussed joint efforts to combat terrorism, piracy, and radicalization. Modi highlighted the importance of India’s strategic partnership with Nigeria, emphasizing the significant role Nigeria plays in Africa, particularly in light of the African Union’s recent inclusion in the G20.

Three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed, covering cultural exchange, customs cooperation, and survey cooperation. India also pledged 20 tonnes of relief supplies to assist Nigerians affected by recent floods.

Modi acknowledged the contributions of the approximately 60,000-strong Indian diaspora in Nigeria, calling them a key pillar of the relationship and thanking President Tinubu for ensuring their welfare. He also noted the substantial Indian investment in Nigeria, with over 200 companies contributing approximately $27 billion to various sectors and employing a significant workforce.

Prior to the visit, India and Nigeria held their Second Strategic and Counter-Terrorism Dialogue, focusing on threats from terrorism, extremism, and transnational crime. Modi’s visit will continue to Brazil for the G20 Summit and conclude in Guyana.
