**NEW DELHI** – India’s Ministry of Information Technology (MeitY) is developing a voluntary code of conduct for artificial intelligence (AI) companies operating within the country, according to sources familiar with the matter. The guidelines, expected to be released early next year, will serve as a set of ethical principles for best practices rather than a legally binding framework.
The code will focus primarily on companies building Large Language Models (LLMs) and those utilizing extensive datasets for AI model training. It is intended to establish standards across various AI lifecycle stages, including training, deployment, sales, and mechanisms for addressing misuse.
This move follows an earlier, now-retracted, advisory requiring government permission for the release of AI models and software in India. The government clarified that a comprehensive AI law is still under development and that consultations with stakeholders, including AI companies, are ongoing to formulate a common set of principles. While the voluntary code of conduct represents a significant step toward responsible AI development in India, a fully comprehensive legal framework remains some time away.
