**Canberra, Australia – November 18, 2024** – Australia, Japan, and the United States announced the commencement of trilateral amphibious military training exercises in northern Australia starting in 2025. The announcement, made by the defense ministers of the three nations following meetings in Darwin, comes amid growing concerns over China’s increasingly assertive military actions in the region.
Australian Acting Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles, U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, and Japanese Defence Minister Nakatani Gen expressed serious concerns about China’s destabilizing actions in the East and South China Seas, citing dangerous conduct towards Philippine and other regional vessels. The ministers also emphasized the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.
The joint training, which will begin with Exercise Talisman Sabre, marks a significant escalation in military cooperation between the three countries. Australia will also participate in Japan’s Exercise Orient Shield for the first time next year. Minister Marles stated that the enhanced training opportunities with Japan and the U.S. represent a “fantastic opportunity” to strengthen regional partnerships.
While acknowledging the potential for Beijing’s displeasure, Minister Marles emphasized that the decision reflects a commitment to building strong relationships with like-minded countries and allies.
