**Abuja, Nigeria** – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded a highly successful state visit to Nigeria, marked by strengthened bilateral ties and a commitment to collaborative development within the Global South. During his meeting with Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Modi, the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Nigeria in 17 years, received the Grand Commander of the Order of Niger, the nation’s highest honor.
The two leaders signed three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) focusing on cultural exchange, customs cooperation, and surveying. Furthermore, India pledged 20 tons of humanitarian aid to assist Nigerians affected by recent floods.
Central to the discussions was a shared commitment to addressing the developmental aspirations of the Global South. Modi praised Nigeria’s leadership role within ECOWAS and its contributions to multilateral bodies, emphasizing their joint efforts to amplify Global South priorities on the world stage. Both leaders agreed to enhance cooperation in key sectors including defence, security, trade, energy, technology, health, and education. Modi highlighted India’s support for Nigeria’s G20 and BRICS involvement as a testament to its growing global influence.
President Tinubu also acknowledged the significant contribution of the 60,000-strong Indian diaspora in Nigeria. The visit also saw Modi receive the “key to the city” of Abuja.
Indian officials emphasized the potential for India to share its development solutions with other Global South nations, with Nigeria acting as a key partner. Existing Indian investments in Nigeria total approximately $27 billion, supporting numerous jobs.
Modi’s visit to Nigeria is the first leg of a three-nation tour, which will also include Brazil for the G20 Summit and Guyana.
