The violence has been marked by brutal attacks on both sides. The death toll includes ten Kuki men, identified by police as militants, though Kuki groups claim they were village volunteers. The conflict ignited after the discovery of a Kuki teenager’s body in a river in June, sparking accusations and retaliatory killings, leaving police investigations inconclusive amidst a flood of conflicting social media narratives.
A particularly gruesome incident involved the murder of six members of a Meitei family, including young children, allegedly at the hands of Kuki militants. This followed the alleged rape, murder, and burning of a Hmar schoolteacher, a Kuki tribe member, by suspected Meitei militants on November 7th. Eyewitnesses reported that numerous houses were set ablaze in the Hmar village of Zairawn, with some villagers barely escaping with their lives. The Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) and other Kuki groups implicated the Meitei armed group Arambai Tenggol (AT) in the November 7th attack, while the Meitei community accuses Kuki armed groups of violence. Both sides utilize armed village volunteers, further complicating the situation.
The violence continued with a further 10 suspected Kuki militants killed in a CRPF encounter on Monday, and the hostage-taking and subsequent murder of six Meitei family members. Allegations of arson against churches have also emerged.
