Sun Nov 17 16:11:36 UTC 2024: ## Delhi Implements Strictest Pollution Control Measures Amid Severe Smog
**New Delhi, November 18, 2024** – Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) are facing the strictest pollution control measures yet, as the Air Quality Index (AQI) soared to 457 on Friday, prompting the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) to activate Stage 4 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). The measures, effective from 8 a.m. Monday, aim to combat the severe smog engulfing the region.
The CAQM’s order bans most trucks from entering Delhi, with exemptions only for vehicles carrying essential goods or using clean fuels (LNG/CNG/BS-VI diesel/electric). Non-essential light commercial vehicles registered outside Delhi are also prohibited, unless they are EVs, CNG, or BS-VI diesel vehicles. Delhi-registered BS-IV or older diesel medium and heavy goods vehicles are banned, except for those providing essential services.
All construction on public projects, including highways, roads, and power lines, has been suspended. The CAQM has also recommended online classes for students in grades 6-9 and 11, a 50% work-from-home policy for NCR offices, and the consideration of work-from-home options for central government employees. State governments are empowered to implement further measures, including college closures, restrictions on non-essential commercial activities, and the potential reinstatement of odd-even vehicle rules.
The drastic measures come as Delhi’s AQI reached a hazardous level, driven by unfavorable weather conditions. The CAQM hopes these stringent actions will help alleviate the severe air pollution crisis currently affecting the region.
