**New Delhi, November 18, 2024** – Delhi has implemented the fourth phase of its Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP-4) today, November 18th, due to dangerously high levels of air pollution. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) triggered GRAP-4 after the Air Quality Index (AQI) reached 468 at 9 PM on November 17th. An AQI above 450 necessitates the implementation of GRAP-4’s stringent measures.
Key measures under GRAP-4 include:
* **School Closures:** Schools from classes 6 to 12 in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) are shifting to online classes until further notice. Delhi government has also announced online classes for students of classes 6 to 11.
* **Work From Home:** The government has mandated that 50% of employees in both public and private offices work from home.
* **Vehicle Restrictions:** A ban is in place on the entry of most heavy diesel vehicles into Delhi, with exceptions only for those transporting essential goods. Medium and heavy diesel goods vehicles already registered in Delhi are also banned, excluding those carrying essential supplies. Only BS-VI compliant four-wheeled diesel vehicles are permitted.
* **Industrial Restrictions:** Most industrial activities in the NCR are prohibited, except for those producing essential goods like PNG fuel, milk, dairy products, and medical supplies.
* **Construction Halt:** Construction and demolition activities are suspended, along with other projects including flyovers, highways, bridges, and pipelines.
The CAQM’s decision comes in response to several days of severely polluted air, causing significant health concerns for Delhi’s residents. While the restrictions aim to curb pollution, the long-term effects of these measures remain to be seen. The situation continues to be closely monitored.
