Sun Nov 17 14:58:36 UTC 2024: ## Manipur Erupts in Fresh Violence as Ultimatum Issued to Government

**Imphal, Manipur:** Fresh violence has erupted in Manipur, with mobs attacking the homes of ministers and MLAs over the past two days. The unrest follows the discovery of six decomposed bodies of alleged hostages, linked to a recent shootout in Jiribam where 10 Kuki militants were killed. This has reignited tensions in the Imphal Valley, leading to an ultimatum from Meitei-dominated civil society groups.

The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) spokesperson, Khuraijam Athouba, demanded immediate military action against armed groups and warned of further public anger if decisive action isn’t taken. He called for all MLAs to convene and address the crisis.

The state cabinet has requested the Centre to reconsider the re-imposition of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in six police station areas. Meanwhile, the opposition, led by Okram Ibobi Singh, is criticizing both the state and central governments for the breakdown of law and order, even suggesting MLA resignations as a potential solution. The Centre has deployed top CRPF officials to the state.

Adding to the complexity, Kuki-Zo tribal bodies are demanding comprehensive AFSPA coverage for the valley districts, a counter-demand to the Meitei groups’ calls for its removal. The Committee on Tribal Unity of Sadar Hills has specifically urged the Union Home Ministry to extend AFSPA to the remaining 13 police stations in the valley districts while withdrawing it from hill areas.

Human rights activist Sylvia from Kangpokpi echoed the growing frustration, stating, “Enough is enough. Our cries for justice cannot be silenced anymore.” The situation remains highly volatile, with the potential for further escalation.
