**Abuja, Nigeria** – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded his first official visit to Nigeria today, praising the strong bonds between the two nations and highlighting India’s remarkable economic progress. Addressing a large gathering of the Indian diaspora in Abuja, Modi described the atmosphere as “marvellous,” feeling like a “city of Bharat” rather than Abuja. He expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome received, including a National Award of Nigeria bestowed upon him by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Modi emphasized the significant contributions of the Indian community to Nigeria’s development, citing examples ranging from education and healthcare to entrepreneurship, mentioning prominent Indian businesses that have become integral to the Nigerian economy. He underscored the shared history of the two countries, noting their collaborative roles in the fight for independence and their current partnership.
The Prime Minister’s address also focused extensively on India’s economic achievements. He highlighted the remarkable growth of India’s economy, its expansion into sectors like manufacturing and technology (particularly the burgeoning startup sector), and advancements in space exploration, citing the Chandrayaan and Mangalyaan missions as sources of national pride. He also spoke of India’s success in poverty reduction, lifting 250 million people out of poverty in the last decade. Modi projected continued growth, aiming for a $5 trillion economy by the time India celebrates its 100th year of independence in 2047.
Modi lauded India’s role as a global ally, referencing its vaccine diplomacy during the COVID-19 pandemic, supplying vaccines and medicines to over 150 countries, including Nigeria. He also celebrated India’s successful advocacy for the African Union’s permanent membership in the G20 during India’s presidency.
Concluding his speech, Modi extended a personal invitation to the Indian diaspora in Nigeria to visit India in January 2024 for a series of major festivals, including Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, the Maha Kumbh Mela, and Republic Day, encouraging them to bring their families and Nigerian friends to experience India’s rich culture and heritage. The speech concluded with the rousing chant of “Bharat Mata Ki Jai!” (Hail Mother India!).
