Mon Nov 18 08:20:37 UTC 2024: ## Top AAP Leader Kailash Gahlot Defects to BJP, Citing Party’s Compromised Values

**New Delhi:** In a significant political shift ahead of Delhi’s February Assembly elections, senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and former Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday. The move, described as a “turning point” by BJP leader ML Khattar, comes less than three months before the crucial elections.

Gahlot, a prominent AAP member since the Anna Hazare movement, vehemently denied allegations that his defection was due to pressure from central investigative agencies like the CBI and ED. He attributed his decision to what he termed a decline in AAP’s commitment to its core values, suggesting the party’s focus had shifted towards political ambitions. He specifically criticized the party’s leadership for prioritizing personal agendas over the needs of the people.

While AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal has remained silent on the matter, other party members have accused Gahlot of succumbing to pressure. The BJP, however, has dismissed such claims, maintaining the independence of the CBI and ED.

Gahlot’s relationship with AAP appeared to sour over the past few months, culminating in his removal as Law Minister in December 2023. A notable point of contention was a dispute over who would hoist the national flag on Independence Day, with Kejriwal delegating the task to Atishi, a move perceived as highlighting her rising prominence within the party. Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena ultimately assigned the task to Gahlot.

Gahlot, who represents the Nazafgarh Assembly seat since 2015, was considered a close confidante of Kejriwal, even serving as a potential successor during Kejriwal’s time in jail. His defection is a major blow to the AAP and is expected to significantly impact the upcoming elections.
