Mon Nov 18 16:18:47 UTC 2024: ## Delhi Chokes on ‘Severe Plus’ Air Quality, Flights Disrupted
**New Delhi, Nov 18, 2024** – Delhi’s air quality plummeted to a “severe plus” level on Monday, reaching an alarming Air Quality Index (AQI) of 484 – the worst reading of the season. The toxic smog drastically reduced visibility, leading to widespread disruption. At least 15 flights were diverted, and over 100 delayed at Delhi airport due to poor visibility. The crisis prompted a surge in demand for air purifiers and masks, with traders reporting sales increases of up to 70%.
The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) reported the AQI, prompting the immediate implementation of stricter pollution control measures. These included a ban on most truck entries, a halt to construction on public projects, and the shift to online learning for many schools. The government also encouraged work-from-home arrangements for public sector employees.
The crisis is being exacerbated by a record number of farm fires in Punjab. On Monday alone, 1,251 new farm fire incidents were reported, bringing the seasonal total to 9,655 – a figure significantly higher than in previous years, despite a reported 71% decrease compared to the same period last year. Muktsar district reported the highest number of incidents with 247.
Delhi’s Environment Minister, Gopal Rai, stated that only artificial rain or strong winds could clear the smog, criticizing the central government for inaction on the Delhi government’s request for such interventions. The Supreme Court also questioned the Delhi government regarding the delayed implementation of Stage 4 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP).
Doctors are warning of significant health risks associated with the hazardous air quality, which, according to IQAir, exceeded acceptable levels by more than 17 times. The situation prompted calls from various quarters for stronger action and mitigation strategies. The severe air pollution has created a medical emergency across North India, according to Delhi Chief Minister Atishi.
