Mon Nov 18 15:35:15 UTC 2024: ## Delhi Traffic Police Collects Over ₹5 Crore in Fines on First Day of Stricter Pollution Rules

**New Delhi, November 18, 2024** – The Delhi Traffic Police cracked down hard on polluting vehicles on Friday, the first day of stricter anti-pollution measures under the Graded Action Response Plan (GRAP). Over ₹5 crore in fines were levied, with over ₹1 crore stemming from the ban on BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel vehicles. More than 500 challans were issued for violating this ban, each carrying a ₹20,000 fine.

The crackdown also targeted vehicles lacking Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates. A total of 4,855 vehicles were fined nearly ₹4.8 crore for this violation, with each fine amounting to ₹10,000.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Rajiv Kumar Rawal stated that approximately 3,000 vehicles were checked across three areas, with intensified checks at border points to turn back prohibited vehicles. Around 300 vehicles were turned away at the borders.

The stricter measures, implemented due to deteriorating air quality, include a ban on construction activities, staggered government office timings, and the prohibition of entry for interstate non-electric-CNG buses in addition to the private vehicle ban. The measures are part of the Delhi government’s efforts to combat air pollution in the national capital.
