Sun Nov 17 18:37:27 UTC 2024: ## Delhi Choked by Dense Smog, Flights Diverted, Schools Closure Demanded
New Delhi, India – A thick blanket of smog engulfed the Indian capital on Wednesday, causing near-zero visibility and severely disrupting air and ground transportation. The Indira Gandhi International Airport reported visibility reduced to just 125 meters on the runway, forcing the diversion of ten flights to Jaipur and Lucknow airports. Several other flights experienced significant delays.
The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi remained critically high for the 15th consecutive day, reaching 366 – classified as “severe.” Neighboring states of Haryana and Punjab also suffered from similarly poor air quality, with Panipat (Haryana) recording an AQI of 336 and Mandi Gobindgarh (Punjab) at 308.
In response to the worsening air quality, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) urged the Delhi government to close schools up to the 5th grade. The severe smog continues to pose significant health risks to residents and disrupt daily life in the national capital region.
