Sun Nov 17 19:37:11 UTC 2024: ## Delhi Chokes on Toxic Air as Pollution Reaches Hazardous Levels
**New Delhi, India** – Delhi is grappling with a severe air pollution crisis, forcing Chief Minister Atishi to issue urgent directives to protect its citizens. The Air Quality Index (AQI) has soared to 498, categorized as extremely hazardous, prompting concerns about respiratory illnesses. Visibility has plummeted to 500m and 400m in Palam and Safdarjung, respectively.
CM Atishi has advised residents to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary and to wear masks if venturing out. Construction activities have been halted to mitigate the crisis. Schools have also taken action, shifting students up to 5th grade to online classes.
The pollution is largely attributed to the burning of crop residue in neighboring Punjab and Haryana states, a yearly occurrence that significantly worsens Delhi’s air quality. This has led to widespread disruption, impacting transportation – causing delays in flights and trains – and significantly impacting the daily lives of Delhi residents.
The situation mirrors similar past crises, with the government implementing Graded Response Action Plan-III to curb the pollution. Further restrictions on construction and demolition have been imposed. The severity of the situation is underscored by the fact that Lahore, Pakistan, is also experiencing extremely high pollution levels (AQI 770). Experts warn of a high risk of respiratory problems due to the hazardous air quality.
