Mon Nov 18 13:28:22 UTC 2024: ## Corporate Mining Threatens Tribal Communities in Andhra Pradesh

**Parvatipuram-Manyam, Andhra Pradesh – November 18, 2024** – The Rythu Coolie Sangham (RCS), a farmers’ and laborers’ union, has accused corporate companies of rampant mineral extraction in Andhra Pradesh’s tribal areas, facilitated by relaxed regulations under the Forest (Conservation) Act of 2023. Speaking at a memorial meeting for tribal leader Janni Tirupati in Duggeru village, RCS state president Simhadri Jhansi alleged that the loosened norms have led to indiscriminate mining, forcing thousands of tribal people from their homes.

The government’s demand for 30 years of residency proof to claim land rights is further exacerbating the situation, as over 90% of tribal residents lack official land titles (“patta”), according to RCS state secretary Dantuluri Varma. He highlighted the difficulties faced by tribal communities in providing the necessary documentation, emphasizing the importance of Janni Tirupati’s legacy in their ongoing fight for rights.

The RCS organized protests and rallies to mark Tirupati’s death anniversary, warning of tribal retaliation if the government fails to issue land titles and protect their rights. The union leaders issued a strong call for immediate government intervention to address the displacement and protect the livelihoods of the affected tribal communities.
