Sun Nov 17 16:44:52 UTC 2024: ## Son of Congress Leader Charged with Hit-and-Run

**Mangaluru, November 17, 2024** – Prajval Shetty, son of Congress leader Belapu Deviprasad Shetty, has been charged with rash and negligent driving resulting in the death of 39-year-old Mohammed Hussain. Hussain, a resident of Belapu, succumbed to injuries a day after being struck by Shetty’s four-wheeler on November 13th on the Punchalakadu-Belapu Road.

Shetty fled the scene after the 5 a.m. accident, failing to provide medical assistance or notify authorities. While initially charged under the Indian Motor Vehicles Act for rash and negligent driving and failing to report the accident, the Shirva police added Section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita (BNS) following Hussain’s death. This section pertains to causing death by rash and negligent act.

Though Section 106(2) of the BNS could have been applicable, its implementation is currently on hold by the central government. Shetty was apprehended, and his vehicle and documents were seized. He was released on station bail pending further investigation. The police are completing their investigation and will file a chargesheet soon.

Belapu Deviprasad Shetty, the accused’s father, also serves as president of the Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Kasaragod Kambala Committee and as a director of the SCDCC Bank, Mangaluru.
