**Madrid, Spain –** The aviation industry witnessed a significant milestone on Thursday with the inaugural flight of the Airbus A321XLR, a revolutionary single-aisle aircraft designed for long-haul routes. The aircraft, operated by Iberia Airlines, completed its maiden journey from Madrid to Boston.
The A321XLR, boasting an extended range of approximately 8,700 km, is the longest-range single-aisle aircraft currently available. Airbus highlights its 30% fuel efficiency improvement per seat compared to previous models, making it both cost-effective for airlines and environmentally friendlier for long-distance travel.
This increased range opens up new possibilities for airlines. Aer Lingus, for example, plans to utilize the A321XLR for new long-haul routes to Nashville and Indianapolis from Dublin next year. The aircraft’s ability to serve previously impractical destinations could also alleviate overcrowding at popular tourist hotspots.
Aviation expert Miquel Ros praised the aircraft’s cabin design, noting a balance between space and efficiency. While business class seats are slightly narrower than those on twin-aisle aircraft, they still offer a premium experience with fully flat beds. Economy class, he reported, provides comparable legroom and in-flight entertainment to larger planes. He also commended the two modern galleys designed to optimize food service within the smaller cabin space.
The A321XLR’s successful launch comes alongside other developments in the aviation sector, including Singapore Airlines’ retrofitting of its Airbus A350-900s to include first-class seating on select aircraft operating the world’s longest nonstop flights.
