The selection allegedly occurred during a clandestine meeting of experts on September 26th, following a request from the ailing 85-year-old Ayatollah Khamenei.
Mojtaba Khamenei, who rarely appears in public but has been active in Iranian politics since the 2009 elections, was granted the prestigious title of Ayatollah in 2021. Iran International suggests the secrecy surrounding the decision was intended to mitigate potential public backlash. The Iranian government has yet to officially comment on these reports.
