Mon Nov 18 14:16:36 UTC 2024: ## Iran’s Supreme Leader’s Son, Mojtaba Khamenei, Reportedly Chosen as Successor

**Tehran** – Reports from Israeli news outlet Ynet News, citing Iran International, claim that Mojtaba Khamenei, the second son of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been secretly chosen as his successor. The selection allegedly occurred during a clandestine meeting of experts on September 26th, following a request from the ailing 85-year-old Ayatollah Khamenei.

Mojtaba Khamenei, who rarely appears in public but has been active in Iranian politics since the 2009 elections, was granted the prestigious title of Ayatollah in 2021. Iran International suggests the secrecy surrounding the decision was intended to mitigate potential public backlash. The Iranian government has yet to officially comment on these reports.

Concerns regarding succession intensified last year following the death of Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash. Previous reports indicated internal disagreements within Iran over Khamenei’s successor. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has served as Iran’s Supreme Leader since 1989, succeeding Ruhollah Khomeini.
