Sun Nov 17 16:55:37 UTC 2024: ## Delhi Chokes: Priyanka Gandhi Highlights Air Pollution Crisis as City Suffers Record Levels

**New Delhi, November 16, 2024** – Delhi is grappling with a severe air pollution crisis, forcing the government to issue advisories urging residents, especially children and the elderly, to stay indoors. Schools have been advised to switch to online classes. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra highlighted the alarming situation, tweeting about the stark contrast between the air quality in Wayanad and the “gas chamber” conditions she encountered upon arriving in Delhi.

The air quality index (AQI) in many parts of Delhi has soared beyond 450, reaching levels considered hazardous to health. Citizens are reporting breathing difficulties, burning eyes and noses, and severe headaches. The situation has prompted concerns that Delhi may soon be declared uninhabitable. Flights are being diverted, and trains are delayed due to poor visibility.

The ongoing crisis is attributed to a combination of factors, including stubble burning in neighboring states like Haryana and Punjab, and vehicular and industrial emissions within Delhi. While the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) is in place, its implementation seems inadequate to address the emergency. The lack of year-round coordination between the central and state governments is being cited as a major failing.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which governs Delhi and Punjab, has faced criticism for its inconsistent approach, previously criticizing stubble burning in Punjab but now seemingly shifting the blame to Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. Experts stress the need for long-term solutions, including financial aid and technological support for farmers to dissuade them from burning crop residue, and a comprehensive strategy to reduce vehicular and industrial pollution.

The Supreme Court has repeatedly criticized the government’s response, and the recurring nature of this annual crisis underscores the need for proactive, sustainable measures instead of temporary fixes. The current situation, described by many as a perpetual state of emergency, demands immediate and concerted action from all levels of government.
