Mon Nov 18 10:30:00 UTC 2024: ## Manipur Violence Reignites, High-Level Meeting Called
**Imphal, Manipur:** Renewed violence in Manipur has prompted a high-level meeting convened by Union Home Minister Amit Shah today at 12 pm. The meeting will address the deteriorating security situation and discuss strategies to restore peace. Attendees include the Union Home Secretary, IB Chief, Additional Secretary (North East), Special Secretary (Internal Security), officials from paramilitary forces, and top Manipur officials.
This follows a previous meeting Shah held yesterday with senior officials to review the state’s security situation. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has taken several steps in recent weeks, including:
* Issuing strict instructions to security forces on October 15th to maintain law and order.
* Transferring three Manipur-related cases – an attack on a CRPF camp, abductions, and the murder of women and children – to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
* Deploying additional CRPF personnel (2000) to the state and sending CRPF DG Anish Dayal to assess the ground situation.
* Meeting with a Manipur delegation last month to review peace-building efforts.
The recent surge in violence includes an attack on November 16th by protestors on the residences of several MLAs and ministers in Imphal Valley, including an attempted attack on Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s residence. 23 people have been arrested in connection with the incident, which resulted in property damage and arson. Authorities have suspended internet and mobile data services and imposed a curfew in the affected areas to curb the spread of misinformation.
Earlier, on November 11th, armed insurgents attacked the Borobreka police station in Jiribam district, which houses a CRPF camp and a relief camp. Following a clash in which 11 insurgents were killed, six people were abducted from the relief camp. On November 15th, the bodies of a woman and two children were found near the confluence of the Jiri and Barak rivers on the Manipur-Assam border, suspected to be among the abducted individuals. This discovery sparked protests by the Meitei community in Imphal Valley, who issued a 24-hour ultimatum for the arrest of those responsible.
