**Abuja, Nigeria –** Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded a landmark visit to Nigeria, emphasizing the strong democratic and economic bonds between the two nations. Addressing the Indian diaspora, Modi lauded their significant contribution to Nigeria’s development, highlighting their role in bolstering the Nigerian economy and strengthening bilateral ties.

Modi underscored the shared democratic heritage of India and Nigeria, referring to India as the “mother of democracy” and Nigeria as Africa’s largest democracy. He drew parallels between the two nations, citing their shared commitment to democracy, diversity, and large populations. He also evoked the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi’s time in Africa, emphasizing its significance in the shared history of both countries and their struggles for independence.

The Prime Minister highlighted India’s consistent support for Africa’s voice on the global stage, citing India’s successful advocacy for the African Union’s permanent membership in the G20 during its presidency. He framed this as a testament to the growing collaboration between India and Nigeria.

Modi also showcased India’s economic and scientific progress, mentioning the booming startup ecosystem with over 150,000 registered startups and the ambitious Gaganyaan mission to send Indian astronauts into space. Concluding his address, Modi invited the Indian diaspora to the Pravasi Bharatiya Sammelan in Odisha, India, in January 2024.
