**New Delhi:** Delhi’s Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot resigned from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday, citing recent controversies and unfulfilled promises. While Gahlot’s resignation letter mentioned “grave challenges” and “embarrassing controversies” facing the party, speculation immediately mounted that he is poised to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
AAP leaders have accused the BJP of orchestrating Gahlot’s resignation through investigations by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). AAP MP Sanjay Singh claimed the BJP levelled ₹112 crore allegations against Gahlot, leading to immense pressure. AAP spokesperson Priyanka Kakkar echoed this sentiment, stating that facing ongoing ED and CBI cases, Gahlot saw joining the BJP as preferable to potential imprisonment.
The BJP, while not confirming any offer to Gahlot, has reacted positively to his resignation. Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva lauded Gahlot’s decision as “courageous,” suggesting that Gahlot’s departure highlights internal dissatisfaction within the AAP. Sachdeva further argued that Gahlot’s resignation undermines AAP’s claims of honesty.
Gahlot’s resignation comes ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections scheduled for February 2024, adding a significant twist to the already heated political landscape. The move is likely to intensify the ongoing political battle between the AAP and the BJP in the lead-up to the crucial elections.
