Sun Nov 17 08:06:48 UTC 2024: ## Kozhikode Food Safety Department Launches Crackdown on Unregistered Eateries
**Kozhikode, Kerala, November 17, 2024** – The Kozhikode Food Safety Department is launching a major crackdown on unregistered food businesses in the district, deploying five special squads to conduct intensified inspections. While approximately 80% of food entrepreneurs have obtained the mandatory Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) registration, the remaining businesses are facing increased scrutiny.
Food Safety Assistant Commissioner A. Sakeer Hussain stated that the department aims for 100% compliance and will not tolerate non-registration. A series of flash inspections will begin this week across all 13 circle offices in the district. Violators face fines of up to ₹10 lakh. Recent enforcement actions include a ₹1 lakh fine levied on an unregistered bakery in Feroke.
The crackdown extends to all food-related businesses, including those selling fruits, vegetables, meat, and fish, regardless of size or sales location (push carts, petty shops, etc.). Authorities emphasize that awareness of the regulations is widespread, yet compliance remains an issue. Failure to renew FSSAI registration will also be considered a serious offense, with businesses required to visibly display current licenses. The department is particularly targeting individuals operating profitable “home-made food” ventures without the necessary licenses. Officials stressed that obtaining FSSAI registration is crucial for safe and legal operation within the food industry.
