**Mexico City, Mexico** – The Miss Universe 2024 competition kicked off with a dazzling display of national costumes Thursday evening at Arena CDMX. 126 contestants from around the globe showcased elaborate designs representing their home countries, ranging from traditional folk art to unique national symbols.

Designs included Miss Nicaragua’s recreation of the León Cathedral, Miss Kenya’s tribute to the nation’s renowned athletes, and Miss Chile’s inventive roulette wheel costume inspired by a popular TV show. Other contestants drew inspiration from national flora and fauna, with examples such as Miss Bangladesh’s tiger costume and Miss Ivory Coast’s elephant-themed outfit. Miss Myanmar’s golden owl costume with hidden wings and Great Britain’s oak tree-inspired ensemble were also notable highlights.

The national costume competition, part of the pageant’s preliminary round, was followed by a swimwear competition. Winners for both will be announced on Saturday, before the field is narrowed down to the top 30 finalists vying for the Miss Universe crown, currently held by Sheynnis Palacios of Nicaragua.
