Sun Nov 17 02:54:26 UTC 2024: ## Kashmir Braces for Light Rain and Snow, Water Scarcity Concerns Remain
**Srinagar, November 15, 2024** – Jammu and Kashmir is bracing for light to moderate rain and snow over the next 24 hours, according to weather forecasts. Independent forecaster Faizan Arif Keng predicts snowfall in higher reaches, including Sadhna Top, Razdan Top, and Gulmarg, with a possibility of light snowfall in Sonamarg and Gulmarg. Some plains may see light rainfall. A sharp drop in night temperatures is also expected next week, potentially bringing the first sub-zero temperatures of the season.
The Meteorological Department (MeT) corroborates this prediction, forecasting generally cloudy weather with light rain and snow in higher reaches until tomorrow afternoon. Director Dr. Mukhatar Ahmad anticipates improved weather conditions from Saturday afternoon, with generally dry weather expected from November 17th to 23rd. Light rain and snow in isolated higher reaches are possible on November 24th.
The MeT has issued an advisory warning of potential temporary disruptions to surface transportation due to snowfall on several mountain passes, urging tourists and travelers to plan accordingly. Razdan Top experienced snowfall Friday, temporarily closing the pass.
Despite the upcoming precipitation, concerns remain over acute water scarcity in the region. October saw a 74% rainfall deficit, and November is currently showing a 67% deficit. Shopian district is the hardest hit, with a 96% deficit. Srinagar has recorded a 76% deficit. The lack of substantial rainfall is exacerbating the already low water levels in the Jhelum River and other waterways.
