PERTH, AUSTRALIA – With the Border-Gavaskar Trophy just around the corner, India faces a crucial selection dilemma. The availability of captain Rohit Sharma for the first Test in Perth on November 22nd remains uncertain. His absence would necessitate a captaincy change, likely to Jasprit Bumrah, and more importantly, would leave a gaping hole at the opening position.
Former India coach Ravi Shastri has weighed in on the matter, advocating for Shubman Gill to open should Rohit be unavailable. Shastri expressed reservations about Abhimanyu Easwaran’s recent performance with India A against Australia A and urged current coach Gautam Gambhir to closely scrutinize the net sessions of KL Rahul, Easwaran, and Gill to assess their form and suitability for the challenging Australian conditions. Shastri stressed the importance of observing players’ footwork and rhythm in the nets, even above immediate run-scoring statistics.
Shastri’s preference for a “horses for courses” approach, a hallmark of his tenure with Virat Kohli, highlights his belief in adapting the team’s composition to specific conditions. He expects most of the team to be straightforward selections, but acknowledges that the uncertainty surrounding the opening batsmen requires a gut feeling decision based on a careful assessment of their nets performances.
Regarding spin bowling, Shastri believes that only one specialist spinner should feature in the Perth Test, favoring Ravindra Jadeja over Ravichandran Ashwin due to Jadeja’s all-round capabilities and superior overseas form. He cited the pace and bounce of the Perth pitch as needing to be exploited by fast bowlers to maintain pressure on Australian batsmen. The choice, however, will ultimately depend on current form exhibited during practice. The remaining four Tests of the series will be played in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney.
