**MEXICO CITY** – Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo will attend the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on November 18th, marking her first international trip as head of state. The Presidency confirmed Sheinbaum will hold bilateral meetings with several world leaders to strengthen international relations.
The Mexican government released a statement detailing the meetings, which were confirmed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE). Sheinbaum is scheduled to meet privately with representatives from countries including Canada, India, the United Kingdom, and Vietnam, among others. While specific dates and times haven’t been released, the SRE stated the meetings aim to explore new opportunities for cooperation.
The G20 summit brings together 19 countries and the European Union, representing approximately 85% of global gross product, two-thirds of the world’s population, and 75% of international trade. Discussions will focus on key global economic issues, including economic growth, financial stability, international trade, climate change, and sustainable development.
President Sheinbaum announced her attendance at the summit during a press conference on November 14th, stating she would travel commercially with a small team. She cancelled a previously scheduled trip to receive an award from the University of California, Berkeley, due to the G20 commitment.
This participation contrasts with that of her predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who avoided such summits during his first year in office. His first international trip was to the United States in 2020 to meet then-President Donald Trump.
