**New Delhi, [Date]** – Delhi Traffic Police has issued a record number of fines for pollution under control (PUC) certificate violations in 2024, exceeding previous years significantly. According to official data released today, over 2.7 lakh challans (278,772) were issued for PUC violations by October 31st, a sharp increase from 232,885 in 2023 and 164,638 in 2022.
This surge is attributed in part to a special October drive targeting vehicles without valid PUC certificates, resulting in over 47,000 additional challans. The crackdown took place at various locations across the city, including ITO Chowk, Peeragarhi, Ashram Chowk, Anand Vihar, and Mehrauli. Each violation carries a hefty fine of Rs 10,000, processed through the courts.
Furthermore, the police seized 3,908 end-of-life vehicles this year, a substantial increase from 528 in 2023 and 1,147 in 2022.
While the overall number of traffic challans issued in 2024 (455,808) is slightly lower than in 2023 (470,771), the significant rise in PUC violations highlights the increased focus on curbing vehicular pollution in the national capital. The number of vehicles towed also increased this year to 163,399 compared to 160,799 in 2023 and 133,800 in 2022. However, the number of notices issued to traffic rule violators decreased to 935,654 this year, compared to over 1 million in both 2023 and 2022.
