Sun Nov 17 09:36:24 UTC 2024: ## Sri Lanka Spinners Bowl New Zealand to Defeat in Dambulla ODI

**Dambulla, Sri Lanka:** Sri Lanka secured a thrilling 45-run victory over New Zealand in the second ODI at Dambulla, ending a lengthy winless streak against the Black Caps. The win, achieved via the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method after rain interruptions, marked Sri Lanka’s first ODI triumph over New Zealand since December 2015.

Centuries from Kusal Mendis (143) and Avishka Fernando (100) propelled Sri Lanka to a strong 324/5 in 49.2 overs, despite a rain delay early in their innings. Their 206-run partnership formed the backbone of Sri Lanka’s impressive total, punishing New Zealand’s slow bowlers who conceded 211 runs in 33 overs at an alarming 6.39 runs per over.

The rain returned, significantly reducing the New Zealand chase to 221 runs from 27 overs. Will Young (48) and Tim Robinson (35) provided a promising start, reaching 88 without loss. However, the introduction of Sri Lanka’s spin attack triggered a dramatic collapse. Maheesh Theekshana (2-32) and Charith Asalanka (2-15) wreaked havoc, dismantling the New Zealand middle order. Five wickets fell for only 22 runs in 29 balls, effectively ending the chase. Jeffrey Vandersay (1-40) further stifled the run-rate, and Dilshan Madushanka (3-39) cleaned up the tail, leaving New Zealand stranded on 175/9.

Despite a late flourish from Michael Bracewell (34*), New Zealand’s hopes were dashed by the masterful spin bowling display, leaving Sri Lanka to celebrate a resounding victory and a 1-1 series draw.
