**Bengaluru, November 17, 2024** – Karnataka’s Transport Department will introduce advanced smart driving licenses (DLs) and registration certificates (RCs) starting January or February 2025. These new cards, replacing the current PVC versions, will feature embedded chips and QR codes for enhanced security and durability.
The smart cards, made from polycarbonate, will utilize laser engraving to prevent tampering and ensure longevity. A QR code will allow quick access to basic information for police and transport officials at checkpoints, eliminating the need for extensive manual checks. A dedicated chip reader will provide authorized personnel with access to more detailed information.
The DLs will include personal details like name, address, validity period, blood group, and emergency contacts. RCs will display vehicle information such as registration number, chassis and engine numbers, and owner details, with additional specifics accessible via the QR code.
The cards will be centrally printed in Bengaluru to ensure consistent quality and efficient distribution across the state. Several other states, including Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, and Himachal Pradesh, have already implemented similar systems. This upgrade reflects the department’s commitment to modernization and improved security measures for driver and vehicle documentation.
