Sun Nov 17 01:30:00 UTC 2024: ## Lokayukta Seeks Supreme Court Intervention for 93-Year-Old Prisoner
**Kalaburagi, November 17, 2024** – Upa Lokayukta Justice B. Veerappa has urged the Supreme Court to release a 93-year-old woman serving a three-year sentence in Kalaburagi Central Jail. During a Saturday inspection of the jail, Justice Veerappa encountered Nagamma, a resident of Jewargi taluk, imprisoned since 1995 on dowry harassment charges (Section 498A of the IPC). He deemed her age and frail condition unsuitable for continued incarceration.
Justice Veerappa, who conducted a broader review of jail conditions including food quality and inmate well-being, described Nagamma’s case as unprecedented in his career. He personally contacted the Supreme Court’s Registrar General to discuss the matter and instructed the district legal services authority to file a review petition seeking her release.
The inspection also included a review of food provisions, with Justice Veerappa personally sampling the meals. He encouraged inmates to adopt a daily routine incorporating exercise and reading, emphasizing the jail’s role in personal transformation. Requests for parole were also addressed, with instructions given to the jail superintendent to process them appropriately. Justice Veerappa concluded his visit by interacting with the women inmates and promoting the availability of free legal aid.
