**Nagpur, India** – India’s preparations for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia have suffered a significant blow with the news that opening batsman Shubman Gill has fractured his thumb. Gill sustained the injury during an intra-squad practice match and scans revealed a fracture that will sideline him for at least two weeks. This rules him out of the first Test, scheduled to begin on November 22nd in Nagpur.

A BCCI source confirmed the injury to the Indian Express, stating that Gill’s thumb requires at least a fortnight to heal. While this absence from the first Test is confirmed, there is hope for his recovery in time for the second Test, commencing December 6th in Adelaide.

Gill’s injury opens the door for KL Rahul’s return to the team, however, Rahul himself sustained an elbow injury during the same practice match and his availability remains uncertain. He was reportedly present at the WACA on Saturday but did not participate in training.

The team is also awaiting the return of captain Rohit Sharma, who is expected to be available for the first Test after the recent birth of his child. Earlier minor injuries to Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, and Sarfaraz Khan had also raised concerns. The spate of injuries during practice matches has cast a shadow over India’s preparations for the highly anticipated series.
