Sun Nov 17 09:58:14 UTC 2024: ## Senior AAP Minister Kailash Gahlot Resigns, Poised to Join BJP
**New Delhi:** In a major blow to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) months before the Delhi Assembly elections, senior minister Kailash Gahlot has resigned from the party, citing internal challenges and accusing the party of prioritizing political agendas over public service. Gahlot, who held key portfolios including Home, Transport, IT, and Women and Child Development, is widely expected to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Gahlot’s resignation letter, addressed to AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal, sharply criticizes the party’s performance, pointing to unfulfilled promises like the cleaning of the Yamuna River. He also alluded to controversies surrounding the renovation of the Chief Minister’s residence, dubbed “Sheeshmahal” by the BJP, as a factor contributing to a loss of public trust.
“Political ambitions have overtaken our commitment towards people, leaving many promises unfulfilled,” Gahlot wrote, adding that the party’s focus on fighting the central government has hindered its ability to deliver basic services.
The BJP has welcomed Gahlot’s resignation, with spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla characterizing the AAP as having transformed from “Aam Aadmi Party” to “Khaas Aadmi Party” (special people’s party) and “Arvind Aadmi Party”. Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva praised Gahlot’s “bold step” and suggested his move demonstrated a belief that Kejriwal misused public funds.
Gahlot’s departure, particularly given his handling of crucial portfolios including finance following Manish Sisodia’s arrest, is considered a significant setback for AAP ahead of the upcoming elections. The resignation comes as Atishi is serving as acting Chief Minister following Kejriwal’s temporary relinquishing of the post after his own bail in a corruption case. The upcoming election will be a crucial test for the AAP’s standing in the face of this major internal upheaval.
