The investigation, detailed by *48 Hours* correspondent Peter Van Sant, reveals a complex case involving jealousy, obsession, and a meticulously planned murder. Burkett, involved in a contentious custody battle with the father of her one-year-old daughter, Andrew Beard, was shot and stabbed to death on October 2, 2020.
Police quickly focused on Beard, but the investigation uncovered a deeper conspiracy involving Beard’s fiancée, Holly Elkins. Authorities determined Elkins orchestrated a campaign of harassment against Burkett, including placing a GPS tracker on her car, making false 911 calls, and filing false police reports.
