Sun Nov 17 07:40:00 UTC 2024: ## AirAsia X Launches Direct Flights Between Kuala Lumpur and Nairobi
**NAIROBI, Kenya (Bernama) –** AirAsia X Bhd (AAX) has launched its inaugural direct flight connecting Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Nairobi, Kenya, marking the airline’s entry into East Africa. The first flight, which took place on November 15th, 2025, boasted a nearly 90 percent passenger load factor.
This four-times-a-week service is currently the only direct air link between Malaysia and Africa. According to AirAsia X CEO Benyamin Ismail, the Kuala Lumpur to Nairobi flight carried approximately 278 passengers, while the return flight saw a 75 percent occupancy rate, with a significant number of Kenyan passengers returning to Kuala Lumpur. Ismail expressed confidence that maintaining an 85 percent load factor will allow the airline to meet or exceed its annual target of transporting over 156,000 passengers on this route.
The successful launch comes amidst the ongoing acquisition of AAX’s sister companies by Capital A Bhd. Capital A co-founder and executive chairman Datuk Kamarudin Meranun confirmed that the acquisition, encompassing AirAsia Aviation Group Ltd (AAAGL) and AirAsia Bhd (AAB) for RM6.8 billion, is on track for completion by the end of November or early December, pending final court approval. Post-acquisition, the company plans to expand its network further, focusing on underserved destinations.
AAX chairman Datuk Fam Lee Ee highlighted the significance of the new route, emphasizing its role in strengthening bilateral relations between Malaysia and Kenya and fostering trade and investment opportunities. The inaugural flight was attended by Malaysian High Commissioner to Kenya Ruzaimi Mohamad and Kenyan State Department for Foreign Affairs director-general of Asia and the Pacific, Ambassador Jane Makori. AAX currently serves over 20 destinations worldwide from Malaysia.
