Sun Nov 17 13:14:42 UTC 2024: ## Manipur Violence Erupts Again After Six Bodies Found, Curfew Imposed

**Imphal, Manipur:** Fresh violence has erupted in Manipur following the discovery of six bodies in Jiribam district, sparking widespread protests and unrest. The victims, reportedly abducted and murdered by militants, included women and children. The incident has led to an indefinite curfew in several Imphal Valley districts and a shutdown of internet services.

The discovery of the bodies ignited intense protests, resulting in widespread damage to property. On Sunday, November 17th, streets in Imphal were littered with debris, a day after protestors vandalized the homes of three ministers and six MLAs, including the Chief Minister N. Biren Singh’s son-in-law, BJP MLA R.K. Imo. Security forces used tear gas to disperse angry crowds.

The violence initially stemmed from the disappearance of six individuals – three women and three children – from a relief camp in Jiribam following clashes between militants and security forces. Their bodies were later recovered in two separate incidents.

The Coordination Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has issued a 24-hour ultimatum demanding military action against those responsible for the killings. They also renewed calls for the repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA), recently reimposed in several districts. Reports of further arson and destruction of property are emerging, though these remain unconfirmed.

The violence has also targeted the homes of several prominent politicians. Protesters set ablaze the residences of three BJP MLAs and one Congress MLA. They also attempted to attack the Chief Minister’s ancestral home, though they were stopped by police.

The situation remains volatile, with security forces deployed to maintain order. The recovery of the bodies of ten militants, claimed by tribal organizations to be village volunteers protecting their communities, following an encounter on November 11th, further fueled the unrest. The central government has taken action, sending the DG CRPF to Manipur and Home Minister Amit Shah cancelling rallies in Maharashtra.
