Fri Nov 15 18:35:51 UTC 2024: ## Sri Lanka Cruises to Victory Over New Zealand in Rain-Hit ODI

**Dambulla, Sri Lanka –** Sri Lanka secured a convincing 45-run victory over New Zealand in a rain-affected first One Day International (ODI) on Wednesday. Kusal Mendis and Avishka Fernando spearheaded Sri Lanka’s triumph with magnificent centuries.

Mendis smashed a career-best 143 off 128 balls, while Fernando notched his first ODI century in three years, scoring 100 off 115. Their 206-run second-wicket partnership, the highest ever by Sri Lanka against New Zealand in ODIs, propelled Sri Lanka to a strong 324-5 in 49.2 overs before rain interrupted play.

The revised DLS target for New Zealand was 221 off 27 overs. Despite a promising 88-run opening stand between Will Young (48) and Tim Robinson (35), New Zealand’s innings faltered against Sri Lanka’s spin attack. Maheesh Theekshana (2-32), captain Charith Asalanka (2-15), and Jeffrey Vandersay (1-40) were particularly effective, restricting New Zealand to 175-9. Dilshan Madushanka added 3-39 with the ball.

New Zealand’s top order crumbled after a strong start, losing five wickets for just 22 runs. Theekshana was instrumental in this collapse, removing both openers in a single over.

The remaining two matches of the three-match series will be played in Pallekele on Sunday and Tuesday. Sri Lanka leads the series 1-0.
