CHENNAI, INDIA – Actress Nayanthara has publicly accused fellow actor and producer Dhanush of holding a personal grudge and engaging in “vengeance” after he blocked the use of footage from their 2015 film, *Naanum Rowdy Dhaan*, in her new Netflix documentary. In a scathing Instagram post, Nayanthara detailed the dispute, revealing that Dhanush’s production company, Wunderbar Films, demanded ₹10 crore (approximately $1.2 million USD) for the use of a mere three-second song snippet.
Nayanthara described *Naanum Rowdy Dhaan*, directed by her husband Vignesh Shivan and produced by Dhanush, as “the most special and important film” in her career. She alleges that Dhanush’s actions stem from hurt feelings over the film’s success and include pre-release comments that caused her “unhealable scars.”
The actress contends that Dhanush’s legal justification for blocking the footage, based on copyright, ignores the moral implications. She emphasized the collaborative nature of her documentary, highlighting the efforts of numerous individuals whose work is now jeopardized by Dhanush’s refusal. She questioned the fairness of demanding such a large sum for minimal usage and challenged him to consider the ethical ramifications of his actions.
While acknowledging the legal notice she received, Nayanthara promised a “befitting” legal response and concluded her letter with an appeal for reconciliation, urging Dhanush to choose “love” over continued conflict. The dispute highlights the tensions that can arise within the Indian film industry, even between individuals who have previously collaborated successfully.
