Fri Nov 15 19:32:57 UTC 2024: ## Chennai-Bengaluru Highway’s Poor Condition Prompts MP’s Plea for Increased Funding

**Chennai, November 16, 2024** – DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran has urged Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari to significantly increase funding for repairs on the Chennai-Bengaluru Highway, citing its dangerous condition and inadequate maintenance. In a letter to the Minister, Mr. Maran highlighted the highway’s alarming accident rate, attributed to poor road conditions, insufficient lighting, and a lack of safety measures such as barricades and reflective markers.

Mr. Maran criticized the paltry Rs. 8 crore allocated for repairs, describing it as a gross underestimation of the funds needed. He pointed out that the highway, a vital transport corridor in South India, generates a substantial Rs. 140 crore annually from toll plazas in Sriperumbudur and Kancheepuram, yet none of this revenue appears to be reinvested in maintenance. This, coupled with insufficient government funding, has led to a dangerous situation for commuters, Mr. Maran stated. He stressed the urgent need for improvements to prevent further accidents and loss of life.
