Sat Nov 16 14:36:16 UTC 2024: ## Calicut University Senate Approves Thousands of Degrees Amidst Protests

**Kozhikode, November 16, 2024** – The University of Calicut Senate approved 29,972 degrees at a special meeting held on Saturday. The approved degrees included 17,563 postgraduate, 12,319 undergraduate, and 90 PhDs. Senior Syndicate member Kavumbayi Balakrishnan presided over the meeting in the absence of Vice-Chancellor P. Raveendran.

However, the meeting was disrupted by a protest from members of the Kerala Private College Teachers’ Association. The protestors voiced their opposition to two key decisions: the outsourcing of the Kerala Resources for Education Administration and Planning project to a Maharashtra-based private company, and a fee hike for four-year undergraduate courses. Association members, including V.M. Chacko, P. Sulfi, E. Sreelatha, G. Sunil Kumar, R. Jayakumar, and Manoj Mathews, demanded the reversal of these decisions, citing a lack of prior Senate discussion and concerns about student data privacy.
