Sat Nov 16 06:55:53 IST 2024: ## Gurugram Shuts Down Construction, Implements Strict Pollution Control Measures Amidst Air Quality Crisis

**Gurugram, India –** Facing a severe air pollution crisis and the implementation of Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) Stage 3, Gurugram Deputy Commissioner Ajay Kumar has ordered a sweeping crackdown on pollution sources. Effective Friday, all construction and demolition activities across the district are banned, with the exception of nationally significant projects and those related to healthcare.

The ban includes a wide range of construction-related activities, from excavation and pipeline work to tile cutting and painting. To combat particulate matter, dust suppression measures like road watering and green cover management have been emphasized. Further measures include a ban on the transfer and handling of dust-generating materials like cement and sand, and a suspension of road construction and major repairs. All crusher zones and mining activities have been ordered to shut down.

With air quality deteriorating, the city is preparing to shift primary school classes online to protect children’s health. The MCG is deploying anti-smog guns, water tankers, and road-sweeping machines, using treated wastewater for road spraying. To date, the MCG has fined 68 violators a total of ₹8.05 lakh for offences including garbage burning and improper construction material handling.

Kumar has warned of strict action against violators and urged residents to minimize outdoor activities and follow district guidelines. The MCG and GMDA are tasked with identifying and addressing pollution hotspots. The measures underscore the severity of the pollution crisis and the authorities’ determination to curb it.
