Fri Nov 15 03:40:00 UTC 2024: ## Eagles’ Defensive Backfield: From Worst to First in Just Five Weeks

The Philadelphia Eagles, once plagued by a dismal pass defense, have undergone a remarkable transformation in just five weeks, boasting one of the league’s best secondaries. The secret? A revamped defensive backfield featuring a host of new faces.

After finishing 29th in opposing passer rating last year, the Eagles have skyrocketed to 4th this season. Their pass defense is now ranked 2nd in the league, allowing just eight passing touchdowns, including only one in their five-game winning streak.

The change came about during the bye week when defensive coordinator Vic Fangio inserted rookie Cooper DeJean into the starting lineup, completing the overhaul. Joining DeJean are fellow rookies Quinyon Mitchell, Isaiah Rodgers, and Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, alongside holdovers Reed Blankenship and Darius Slay.

The newcomers have quickly gelled, forming a formidable unit despite their short time together. Rookies DeJean and Mitchell have been particularly impressive, with DeJean’s physicality and Mitchell’s lockdown coverage making a significant impact. Gardner-Johnson has also made his presence felt with multiple interceptions.

Coach Nick Sirianni credits Fangio’s leadership and the players’ dedication to building a strong team dynamic. He emphasizes the importance of communication and trust among the players, especially with the influx of rookies.

“Our togetherness is the biggest thing,” said Mitchell. “We’re just harping on the details lately and keep getting better.”

The Eagles’ revamped secondary faces a tough test this week against Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels. It will be an intriguing matchup as the Eagles’ dynamic defense continues to impress.
