Thu Nov 14 19:54:55 UTC 2024: ## England Dominate West Indies in Thrilling T20 Opener

**Bridgetown, Barbados:** England secured a dominant eight-wicket victory over the West Indies in the first T20 International of the five-match series at Kensington Oval on Saturday. Phil Salt’s blistering century (103* off 54 balls) and an unbeaten maiden half-century from Jacob Bethell (58* off 36) propelled England to a comfortable chase of 183 runs, achieving the target in just 16.5 overs.

The match started with a shaky West Indies innings, where Saqib Mahmood (4-34) ripped through the top order, taking three wickets in his second over. However, a late flurry of runs from Romario Shepherd (35* off 22) and Gudakesh Motie (33 off 14) helped the hosts reach a respectable 182-9.

England’s chase began in electrifying fashion, with Salt smashing four boundaries and a six in the very first over. The opening partnership with Will Jacks (17) amassed 73 runs in the powerplay, before a brief wobble saw the dismissal of both Jacks and returning captain Jos Buttler for a golden duck.

However, Bethell’s calm and composed innings alongside Salt’s aggressive batting ensured a smooth finish. The duo put on an unbroken stand of 107 runs, sealing a comfortable victory for England and a 1-0 lead in the series.

Salt, awarded Player of the Match, praised his own performance, highlighting his enjoyment playing in the Caribbean and his desire to further improve his game. He also lauded Bethell’s impressive debut, calling him a “huge talent” and a valuable asset to the team.

The second T20 International will be played at the same venue on Sunday, with England seeking to consolidate their early advantage.
