**Houston, TX** – Indian-origin astronaut Sunita Williams, currently aboard the International Space Station (ISS), has addressed rumors circulating about her apparent weight loss during her extended stay in space. In a recent interview with the New England Sports Network (NESN), Williams assured viewers that she has not lost any weight.
“A lot of change goes on up here, but it’s funny. I guess there are rumors around me losing weight. But, I’m right at the same amount,” Williams said, dismissing the speculation.
The 59-year-old astronaut, who initially embarked on a 10-day mission with colleague Butch Wilmore as part of Boeing’s Starliner Crew Flight Test (CFT), has been living on the ISS for several months due to a spacecraft malfunction.
Williams attributed the apparent slimming effect on her face to the common phenomenon of fluid shifts caused by microgravity. “It can create a gaunt look, especially on the face,” she explained.
She also emphasized her commitment to maintaining a healthy lifestyle in space, attributing her physical well-being to her “rigorous space exercise regimen.” Williams regularly exercises on a stationary bike, resistance machines, and treadmill, all vital for combating microgravity’s detrimental effects on bone density and muscle mass.
“Biking, treadmill running, weightlifting…it’s important to combat microgravity’s effects,” Williams explained.
In addition to debunking the weight loss rumors, Williams also highlighted her love for Boston sports and even participated in the Medford Celebrity Mile race from space last month. NASA has also confirmed that regular health checks are conducted on astronauts throughout their missions.
